5 Signs Your Turbocharger Needs Attention

The VR30DDTT twin-turbo V6 is one of the best parts of driving a Red Sport 400, but turbochargers take a beating over time and it pays to catch problems early.

A high-pitched whine under acceleration is often the first sign of a failing bearing. If it gets louder as boost builds, don't ignore it.

Blue or gray smoke from the exhaust usually means oil is getting past the turbo seals and burning in the combustion chamber. This is a sign the turbo needs to be rebuilt or replaced soon.

Sluggish boost or a noticeable drop in power can point to a cracked hose, a failing wastegate actuator, or a turbo that's no longer spinning up to spec.

If you're noticing any of these symptoms, it's worth having the wastegate actuator, inlet piping, and oil feed line inspected before the turbo itself takes more damage.
